The couple’s lives are turned upside down when their daughter is cast alongside a controversial lead star. Referenced in The DA'S Office: Ep. 26 – ACOLYTE DISASTER! Could this be the end of DISNEY STAR WARS? (2024). The first half of the film is more of a character study, about a deeply unhappy and lonely housewife, Anette, who soon learns that her husband, Ben, may be having an affair with a famous actress, Alicia. The second half of the film is more of a thriller where we see the pace start to pick up and the wheels start turning in Anette’s head. The film is a real slow burn: cold and frigid at first, then warm and bubbly, then explosive in its final act. It’s captivating, enthralling and suspenseful throughout. It’s anchored by a fantastic performance by Daisy Ridley. She’s a revelation. Her quiet moments of festering rage are excruciating. There is a symbolic scene where we see her break a mirror after pushing themselves into it for a few moments, symbolizing their crumbling marriage. Shazad Latif is also good here. The film has some mediocre aspects. The trailer is quite misleading. It can drag on and get a bit tedious at times. The ending can be cathartic and rewarding for some viewers, while it is mediocre for others. Hiba Ahmed as Matilda, the daughter, is just fine, although the children’s performances in the film are often not very good. She felt more like a prop than a character. And Matilda Lutz, while truly beautiful and charming and convincing as a movie star in the context of the film, was just fine. Perhaps it is because Lutz is Italian that many of her lines sounded strange or stiff. If you like thrillers with strong acting, especially those involving female anger, eroticism, and infidelity, this will be fine for you.
